Church Father's And The Bible Compared On The End Of The World
by Tom Logan
return to main indexThe church fathers believed the end of the world would be accompanied by the the judgment, the resurrection and the assignment of eternal rewards the bible does likewise.
2 Pet 3:4-13
4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For {ever} since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the
beginning of creation."
5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God {the} heavens existed long ago and {the} earth was formed out of water and by water,
6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.
7 But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of
ungodly men.
8 But do not let this one {fact} escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand
years as one day.
9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!
13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. (NAS)It seems Peter associated the coming of the Lord with the end of this earth and the perdition of the wicked.
The coming of the Lord is at the end of the age (of this earth):
Matt 24:3
3 And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what {will be} the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" (NAS)Peter and the end of the earth at Christ's coming:
Matt 13:39-43
39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels.
40 "Therefore just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.
41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,
42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
43 "Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. (NAS)Matt 13:39-43
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do
iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (KJV)Matthew speaking of the same period shows the righteous inherit the kingdom of God at the end of the age of this earth.
Thus according to the bible Christ's advent brings the end of this earth, judgment and the assignment of eternal rewards.
Thus the end of this world is accompanied by the judgment and the assignment of eternal rewards.
